Keeping children lead-safe in Vanderburgh County
The Lead & Healthy Homes program offers free blood lead testing, in-home investigations, and hazard-reduction resources to families in Vanderburgh County, with priority for children under six, pregnant women, and residents of homes built before 1978.
Through this program, we help families identify where lead is hiding in their homes and take practical steps to remove the risk.
Lead exposure is 100% preventable, but its effects on a child's brain development are permanent. There is no safe level of lead in a child's blood, and most children with elevated levels show no visible symptoms, which is why testing matters even when a child seems healthy.
More than two-thirds of Evansville homes were built before 1978, the year lead-based paint was banned in residential use. If your home predates that, a simple blood test is the only way to know whether your child has been exposed.
Environmental lead hazard inspections are carried out when the case manager/risk assessor is alerted to a diagnosed case (by CDC definition) of a child with an elevated blood lead level. These inspections find potential sources of lead in the child’s environment and test those sources for lead content. During these investigations the risk assessor will use an XRF to read levels in paint and take soil, dust, and water samples. It is also the responsibility of the Lead Program to educate the family on the effects of lead poisoning, show them how to clean once lead has been found, provide resources for remediation, and coordinate with primary care providers to monitor the health of the child.
Should your child be tested for lead?
If you answer YES to ANY of the following at risk questions, your child is more likely to have an elevated blood lead level.
- Does your child live in or regularly visit a house or childcare center built before 1978?
- Does your child have a sibling or playmate who has an elevated blood lead level?
- Does your child frequently come in contact with a person who works in an industry using lead, such as a battery factory, smelter, or a radiator shop?
- Does your child frequently come in contact with a person who has a hobby that uses lead, such as stained glass, fishing, or reloading ammunition?
- Is your child a recent immigrant from a country where the use of lead in consumer products is not restricted?
- Is your child a member of a minority group?
- Is your child enrolled in Hoosier Healthwise (Medicaid)?
- Do you give your child traditional remedies that may contain lead, such as Arzacon or Greta?
- Have you exposed your child to traditional cosmetics that may contain lead such as kohl?
